As you all know, MoMU's annual FREE Welcome BBQ will be held this very Saturday! Those of you who have not renewed your membership or would like to sign up as a member, come along and we'll settle the paperwork. Don't forget to bring along your friends for some awesome food (cooked just for you guys by our committee members) and great fun!

PaintBall!

Have you guys decided on your September holidays? Well, we have! Our very first outing as the new committee 08/09 will be in Oakleigh for a Paintball Event! Read on for more details:

Date: 4 Oct 2008 (Sat)
Time: 1pm
(safety briefing starts)
Fees: $48 (members), $54 (non-members);
includes 200 paintballs and gears!
Location: World Series Paintball,
9 Hamilton St, Oakleigh 3166 VIC.

We'll be taking public transport down as a group and it is very important that you're not LATE! If you were to miss the briefing, you will not be allowed to participate in this paintball event, and NO REFUND will be given either.

Also, please note that due to Australia Regulation, you need to be 18 years old and above to participate in this event! And PLEASE bring along your ID!

Travel timing:
We advise everyone to buy their Weekend saver beforehand at 7-11.
Meet at Asia Centre tram stop at 11.00am.
Leave for Flinders Station at 11.15am.
Alternatively, meet at Flinder at 11.30am.
Start moving to platform at 11.45am.
Train leaves Flinders St Station at 12:08 pm.
Arrives at Huntingdale Station 12:34 pm.

Australian Malaysian Film Festival

The Australian Malaysian Film Festival will be held from the 15th - 18th of August at ACMI cinemas in Federation Square.

Some of the masterpieces on show are Sepi, Congkak, Duyung, Waris Jari Hantu and Cuci. There will also be an exhibition of Malaysian hand painted batik and other local fashion.

So head on down to Federation Square to get in touch with your roots back home. There will be special student screenings with English subtitles. Infact, you could even rub shoulders with the Malaysian producers, directors and actors at a Q&A session after the showing of "Duyung". All Monday tickets are priced at a low $5!

THE BIG BBQ!!!

Hey guys, how has the first week of Uni been for you? If you've been having headaches with timetables, tutorial times or your heads are spinning after trying to absorb new information, there is the BIG BBQ coming up!

Where? Princes Park, Parkville (at the northern tip of Uni)
Time? 11am - 3pm

The Big BBQ is being held by MASCA and other Malaysian societies across Melbourne, not only for the purpose of providing a chance for you to mingle, but to congratulate the NCG participants and welcome the newcomers!

It's only $1 or $2 dollars per person or MORE if you're feeling generous :) Malaysians who are new to Melbourne eat for free!

Greetings fellow MoMU-ans. Are you all as pumped as I am to be heading back to our great great University of Melbourne?! As you can see I'm pretty excited about it myself - I miss the Melbournian food as weird as that may sound!

Well, for new and old members alike, if you want to learn more about MoMU and any other clubs that the Uni has to offer, here are some details about the University of Melbourne Clubs and Societies Expo for Semester 2

Watch out for the Malaysian flag as we will be giving new members a chance to win something close to their hearts : great electronic goodies, chocolates and more! Or just come talk to the people manning the booth so that they don't get too bored! :)

Ski with MoMU at Falls Creek!

We've done it once. We're doing it again.

This August, experience a winter wonderland with:

MoMU Ski @ Falls Creek

1-3 August

$565* members
$580* non-members

*Price includes:

Accommodation at Falls Creek Country club - spacious rooms, heated wardrobes, jacuzzi, sauna and swimming pool. Very near the ski lift and ski gear collection point as well!
Ski hire (Snowboard - extra $15)
Ski classes!
Lift and Mountain passes and

It does not include:

Jacket and Pants hire - extra $40 and

If you've never seen snow, Falls Creek will blow you away with their fantastic scenery, pure-white snow and skiing trails. If you're an experienced skier or snowboarder, you would probably know by now that Falls Creek has fantastic snow and challenging slopes.

Some additional information:

We will be departing Melbourne at 2.00am on 1 August (Friday). This gives us 2 FULL days of Skiing! You haven't ski, if you only ski for less than 2 days.

There are basic cooking facilities available in all the rooms. So if you wish to cook your meals, you can. Plus, bring your own snacks because everything up in the mountains is more expensive.

MoMU will be organizing some games and activities on one of the nights to get everyone together and have some fun! So even if you have a small group of friends, you're bound to make new ones at the end of the trip.

It's a Starry Night Market

Hey guys, we are sure that the upcoming Night Market hosted by the Melbourne University Overseas's Student Society (MUOSS) have stirred up quite a buzz among us students for the past few weeks.

If you have been kept in the dark or as the Malay proverb goes "katak di bawah tempurung", Night Market is very much like "Pasar Malam" in Malaysia. Themed with MUOSS "We are Different but the Same" exhibition, students from all over the world are invited to come share their cultural experience with the rest of us. Heaps of delicious foods, each representing a taste of a different cultural background would be there along with performances and even arts and crafts for sale. It is one of Melbourne Uni's highlights of the year, always enjoyed by everyone! So come along and join us in this year's Night Market!

Rock Climbing Saturday

Happy Easter to everyone out there.

We are sure a lot of you had your share of indulgence with the varieties of chocolates out there. And if it isn't chocolate, it has got to be the chance to sleep-in during the chilly mornings of the week. Whether you're on a trip or stressing over assignments, we sure hope your Easter holidays is as great as it can be.

Our next event coming up would be Rock Climbing.

Woo hoo! Just to let all of you know, during the O-week Carnival we have recruited over 200 members and we're still counting as both old and new faces appear at our recruitment booth to sign up.

Hey peeps, studying hard?

So Fiesta Malaysia is over.. A one day event which managed to draw quite a big crowd. Hey, the event is also mentioned in The Star --> Melbourne mayor at our fiesta!! *gasp* Melbourne mayor JOHN SO?!? Coolness!!

So, anyway, we would like to thank MASCA Vic, Malaysia Hall Melbourne and KUAM for putting together this event.. But hor, we must not forget our very own August-poo and SuVy-poo as they endured sleepless nights helping out with the organisation of Fiesta Malaysia.

MoMU is no soup kitchen and will only be providing light refreshments.**

There will be lots of jewelry, art, handcrafted items and interesting sculptures to be seen.

If you’re interested in the Craft Market, come meet us at 10am at Melbourne Central (under the clock area). MoMU will have representatives to bring you to St.Kilda Craft Market before bringing you to the picnic area. It’s like hiring an escort.

It’s not everyday in Malaysia you get to have a picnic. So see you there!

MurderED on the Dance Floor

First off I would like to thank everyone who supported us during the ball. Very importantly, our sponsors, AusEd-UniEd, K-Box, Blue Spirit, STA Travel and also Artbox (check out our Event Sponsors page). As for the rest of you, I hope you had tons of fun. I know I did with all the performances and gifts we had ready for you!

Pictures from the ball would be up shortly after we have compiled them and uploaded them.. If anyone has any pictures to contribute, please zip them up (if there are too many of them) and send them to our club email - club_momu@yahoo.com.au. But here is a preview of what the place actually looked like for those who did not attend the ball.

Now isn't that place cool or what? I definitely think so!

Anyway, many people won prizes sponsored to us by Blue Spirit, K-Box, STA Travel and also Artbox. There were jewelry worth $50, karaoke vouchers worth $100, gifts such as a ladies handbag and an ergonomic mousepad from Artbox and not to forget a voucher from STA Travel, worth $350!

Apart from the lucky draws which went on throughout the night (and really we were giving out these lucky draws every half an hour or so), we had a murder game which ended with Detective Hwa Loong receiving a Cluedo board game from us for being the winner.

Also, not to forget, our prom king and prom queen for the night also known as Mr & Mrs Smith!

The five chosen Mr. Smith for the night were Hayden, August, Andrew, Min Hau and Kingsley. An elimination round left us with Andrew and Min Hau.

It is by answering our question - If you were at a BBQ, how big do you want your sausage to be? - which helped us determined our Mr Smith. Our chosen Mr Smith, Min Hau, suggested that the size did not really matter but it is the process of barbecuing it that really matters the most.

As for our Mrs Smith, the five chosen ones were Fion, Christy, Selina, Chong Chyn and Lina. Once more, an elimination round left us with Fion and Chong Chyn.

And to our question - If you were nasi lemak, how hot do you want your sambal to be? - our chosen Mrs Smith, Chong Chyn, replied that it should be cool and not that spicy as she hopes to cater to everybody's needs.

Our performing bands were Proud Mary and Keepers Arms. Both bands performed exceptionally well and again, we thank them for performing at our ball.

PoisE'n, a dance group had a few fantastic dance moves to show us all. They entertained us with a Japanese dance, an Indian dance and even a Jackson Five dance which made me wanna groove with them.

We then had our after party at Platform One. A really cool place with R&B and House music in different sections of the club. I had a blast dancing to R&B there till late and I hope you guys did too.

So, once more thank you all for supporting us and we hope to see you again next year!!

I know I know we already had a Merdeka Night! But Merdeka is Merdeka and a ball is a ball. They are something totally different and this year, ours fell closely to one another.

Anyway, it is the start of the semester break! So, come on over and have a good time!

Lord Mayor To Welcome International Students To Melbourne

International students living in Melbourne will be officially welcomed to their new home by Melbourne's Lord Mayor John So on Saturday 9th September at Melbourne Town Hall.

The Lord Mayor John So, who came to Australia as an international student, said it will be a day of celebration and entertainment for Melbourne's international students.

"It will be a full day of activities with bands, dance groups and other performers to give thousands of international students a warm welcome to our city," Lord Mayor John So said.

"I want all international students to know that they are an extremely important part of our city and their presence ensures that this city has a dynamic and diverse fabric.

"I encourage all international students from every corner of the globe, regardless of how long they've been in Melbourne, to come to the Town Hall this Saturday for a great day. Local students who would like to be part of the event are also welcome," the Lord Mayor said.

Stalls featuring information about Melbourne and services available for international students will be displayed at the free event.

There are approximately 17,000 international students studying in institutions within the City of Melbourne.

A group of nearly 70 volunteers, including international and local students, have helped organise the event.

Festival of Nations is upon us!

This coming Tuesday (29/8) and Wednesday (30/8), MoMU will be setting up shop at North Court beside Union House... neh the place where always got lunchtime bands and free bbq lunch one ah! Masih tak tau? Errr follow your nose lah there will be heaps of stalls selling all kinds of food from all over the world! (Although most food sold there will probably have a M'sian feel lol) This will ONLY be on during lunchtime from 12 to 2ish though so better come running after lectures before we sell out!

FON is all about learning and sharing our cultures with one another and what better way to do so than to eat eat EAT! So the all important question is... what are we selling? We've decided to go with a kuih stall theme... have a look!

On Wednesday (30/8) as well there will be a one day event called the "FunFAIR of Nations". Basically there will be game stalls showcasing traditional games from Malaysia, Phillipines, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Participation is FREE and the you can collect coupons depending on the number of different games you play or how well you play it! These coupons are redeemable for prizes from MUOSS so what have you got to lose? Come lah hehe we chose chapteh/bulu ayam and batu seremban. Interested yet?

So yeah please drop by and support us ya! And tell all your friends as well! Show all your non-Malaysian friends what they're missing out on in their home countries. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment or on the tagboard. If not then see you guys on Tuesday and Wednesday =)

Btw we will be in pink t shirts on the day like the ones we wore on the BBQ haha and our stall will most prob have the Jalur Gemilang over it. No excuses about not being able to find us ah!

MoMU IGM and Elections

Hi people,

Our constitution has finally been approved by the student union, which means that we will be going ahead with our IGM (Inaugural General Meeting) and official elections - and be well on our way to affiliation with the student union (UMSU)

Anyhoo, the details...

Meeting: Inaugural General Meeting (IGM)
Date: 1st September 2006 (Friday)
Time: 2.00pm
Venue: Undergraduate Room A (2nd floor of Union House, just opposite Rowden White)

Essentially, what we will be doing in the IGM is ratifying our club constitution and voting the official committee in. Any MoMU member from Melbourne University is free to run for the committee.

Oh and please do note that nominations for committee positions will be called out in the IGM, and no proxies are permitted (ie you have to be in the meeting in person if you wish to vote, or run for a position).

Also, even if you are not intending to run for any committee positions, just drop by and vote!!! C'mon and get involved in Malaysian politics. Also, it would be a great chance to get to know your committee members. Come la!!

Asialink and MoMU is pleased to invite all MoMU members and Malaysian students of the University of Melbourne to a cocktail reception with DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah, Raja Muda of Perak and Dato' Seri DiRaja Tajol Rosli Ghazali, Chief Minister of Perak.

DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah is the Crown Prince of Perak and holds a Ph.D. in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and a Masters in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University.

Dato' Seri DiRaja Tajol Rosil Ghazali is an alumnus of The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Economics and Commerce, who has built a highly successful political career over the past two and a half decades. The Chief Minister has a particular interest in working with youth and students, being President of the Asian Youth Council between 1988 and 1999 and is also involved in the University of Melbourne Alumni Association in Malaysia.

Asialink and MoMU is pleased to present this unique opportunity for Malaysian students to meet informally with senior members of the Perak royal family and government.
